And also a transplant of his own bone taken from the iliac crest. Felipe was my help and reminded me of all the steps. For me it is a great emotion to know that they remember so well events of 40 years ago, events that I struggle to remember. At that time I had almost unlimited energy. And I had great courage.

Per tenere il passo con le crescenti richieste finanziare, le suore prevedeno una strategia per raccogliere fondi localmente. La panetteria produce fino a 20.000 pani da 250 grammi al giorno, in parte per uso ospedaliero, mentre la maggior parte veniva venduta a panetterie esterne per generare reddito. La produzione è stata ridimensionata per la carenza di farina in tutto il mondo
L'esperienza ha rivelato che è strategico per mantenere i pazienti nel protocollo terapeutico effettuare controlli mensili e prevedere la distribuzione di cibo, denaro, materiale scolastico e altro di prima necessità

A few days before my shooting the photo in 2019, Armindo’s mother, Carolina, also HIV+, here pictured in her house in the village where I visited her, had come to the monthly meeting of the Sisters with the children and their guardians. She had a long conversation where she explained that the plot of land where she grows the rice, beans and millet she needs for her and her family subsistence is far from the house, and that she leaves the house every day at three in the morning to return in the evening. Armindo would then be alone the whole day. Antonio, the Hospital’s Social Worker, agreed with Carolina when we would visit her at her place. When there a couple of days after, we found that the young wife of Carolina’s brother stays home the whole day. We then agreed that the young aunt will take care of Armindo’s treatment and that she will be instructed how and when to give the ARV medicines to Armindo. Armindo is currently going to school near the Carmelo Hospital. The social worker would thus wait till early March to send him home. This would be the time when it would be possible to change school without major disruption for Armindo. 2023 --Armindo is back home and he is well and tajking his ART Therapy

Going Home after the Monthly Check Ups
This is the story of Carvalho. Carvalho is a very vivacious boy running around the infirmary. He is HIV positive and has to take his Anti Retro-Viral treatment regularly. He lives with his grandpa and his grandma in Lionde, a village close to Chokwe. Here he is pictured with his grandma. His mother died of HIV AIDS and his father’s whereabouts are unknown. Both grandparents work and, at one point, there was no one to check that Carvalho would take his ARV treatment as, and at the time, prescribed. He then had a relapse and his viral load shoot up. He was then readmitted to the Carmelo Hospital, where I photographed him, again and till caregivers’s social conditions would be assessed. His parameters are better now, as his ARV treatment is effective. I went with Antonio, the Carmelo Hospital social worker to visit Carvalho grandfather, Costantino, pictured in the second photo, in Lionde. We also talked to the community responsible, pictured here with Costantino. A decision was taken for Carvalho to go back home. Antonio the social worker will check on him regularly, while the Figlie della Carità sisters have received a small donation of one euro per day for one year to give divided in twelve small handouts every month to Carvalho grandparents under the Distance Adoption programme they run. The monthly meeting, besides handing out the cash, is also an opportunity to see how the boy and his grandma are doing, and to give ten kilograms of soya enriched flour. The sisters follow some 350 children in this way. I hope to update my readers soon about this developing story.
